From reading both chapters from the e-texts, I learned that teaching literacy today is not as simple as most would think. Teaching literacy is so much more than helping students write and read. Both texts explained that literacy has changed significantly over time and that teachers have to adapt to it as well.

Literacy is more than Reading and Writing

Both chapters argued that literacy is not just about books anymore, as it was in the past. Today, it is so much more. Today, students need to understand different cultures and perspectives, as well as technology such as computers, tablets, videos, and even social media. From this, students are learning more about how to think. Something students need to understand when using technology is

1. What is the main purpose?

2. Is this information true, and who created it or wrote it?

This shows how everyday life and literacy connect. Students are always reading online on their tablets, laptops, and phones, and they need the skills to understand what they are seeing.

Process of Learning

Literacy is a process, and teachers need to understand how students learn. Students need to be able to brainstorm their ideas, draft their writing, and revise and improve it, and these are important steps. The same goes for reading; students cannot just read and understand everything. For reading, students should make predictions, ask questions, and reflect on what they read. And from this, I realized that mistakes are serious and part of learning. Students need time to practice and improve, and teachers should be supportive!

Overall, teaching has changed so much. These books support that teachers are not just giving information, but are more like guiding children to learn. Teachers now support diverse learning styles, create meaningful learning experiences, and help students think critically. Not every student is the same, and that is okay. Some students may struggle with writing, and some do not. Some students may struggle with reading, while others need more challenging material. Teachers should now adjust lessons to meet all of these different needs. Both chapters show that literacy teaching today is about more than just reading and writing and is about helping students become thinkers, learners, and communicators. Some things I took away from these chapters that stood out were that learning really is a process, and teachers are more like guides. Classrooms should also feel like a community, and the best approach is a balance between the two.

  1. Addison!

You did a great job on your post for week one! I like the point you included about how students need to understand technology and critically think about what they see online because in today's world a lot of students are surrounded by the media everyday. I also like that you included about how learning is a process and that each student needs to practice, make mistakes, and make progress without feeling discouraged or ashamed. Your point about teachers being guides rather than just giving information to the students stood out to me. No student is going to be successful without a role model who models success for them! Overall you did a really great job this week and I look forward to reading the rest of your posts this session!

The point you made about students needing time to practice, make mistakes, and improve really stood out to me because learning is definitely a process. I also really enjoyed the way you connected literacy to real life technology and online reading it made your reflection very relevant for todays world. Overall I think you did a great job in your post!

  3. Hi Addison!
Your reflection on week one's chapters was really enjoyable to read. I liked how you explained that literacy goes beyond just reading and writing, because I think that's what most people think of when they hear the word literacy. You also made great points about how important it is for students to learn how to critically think about the information they receive! Students today have access to the internet at the snap of their fingers, and making sure they are aware of the inconsistencies and dangers is important.
